Chapter Eleven

The floor of the hideout was covered in tattered paper, and the ceiling still thudded with a seemingly never-ending rain, but inside something burned in the hearts of the four friends. It made them feel alert when they should have been tired. It pulled them together when they should have fallen apart.

‘I think a big problem we have is that we don’t know enough about THE SPOILER,’ Lise said.

‘Makes sense. Know your enemy,’ Stacey replied.

‘How do we do this? Who can tell us more about THE SPOILER?’ Marcus asked.

‘Well, THE SPOILER is a character from The Great Hunt. So, that’s where we can find out more about it, I guess,’ Asim said.

‘But THE SPOILER is still in the story. It’s not like it’s been defeated yet or anything,’ Lise added.

The room fell SILENT. Marcus frowned. This was hard.

‘We could go to Kevin Silverwick and ask him directly,’ Stacey said. There was a desperation in her voice, in all their voices. They didn’t want to let this go.

‘He won’t tell us anything,’ Lise said. ‘I’ve watched his interviews, he doesn’t like to give things away.’

‘Even if we tell him that THE SPOILER is after us?’ Asim said. ‘I mean, I’d help someone out if they told me a character from my story was trying to get them.’

‘Will he believe us, though?’ Marcus said.

‘No, probably not,’ Asim sighed.

The room went quiet again. Marcus anxiously tapped his foot against the floor. There had to be something they could do.

‘I have another idea,’ Lise finally said. Marcus smiled. ‘Maybe we can understand more about how to defeat THE SPOILER by reading more of The Great Hunt.’

‘But you already said THE SPOILER hasn’t been defeated yet in the comics,’ Asim responded.

‘Not in the comics that have been released yet, but I’m sure that in the final issue THE SPOILER will be defeated,’ Lise said. ‘The story doesn’t make sense otherwise. The villains always lose at the end.’

‘Are you saying what I think you’re saying?’ Stacey abruptly got to her feet. A strange look was on her face and a TWINKLE was in her eyes. ‘If we need to see that issue, then we either have to wait for it to come out, which would take ages, or—’

‘Or we somehow take a peek at them in advance!’ Lise suggested.

‘You want us to steal them?’ Marcus asked, shocked.

‘No, not steal,’ Lise said, laughing nervously. ‘But, they’re already written, printed and stored at the school. We just need to go get them a little bit early.’

‘Not get them, steal them – that’s what we’re talking about here,’ Asim said. ‘I know we always bend the rules a little bit, but this isn’t just bending them – it’s breaking the rules completely.’

Marcus watched as Asim looked down at the ground for a second, scanning over the ruined paper beneath his feet. When he glanced back up, there was something different in his eyes, a new spark.

‘OK, I have a plan that doesn’t involve stealing,’ he said. ‘But we are going to need some help.
